Kiel Port, Germany

Ferry passengers arriving at the Port of Kiel will find one of the most interesting ports on the Baltic Sea. The ships passing through the locks of the 'Nord-Ostsee-Kanal' at Holtenau, which is the gateway to the world's busiest artificial waterway, know simply as 'Kiel Canal', generate even more activity on the Firth of Kiel.

Ferries from Oslo in Norway and Göteborg in Sweden tie up in the heart of the city daily and the 'city-centre harbour' is the starting place for numerous cruise liners.

Its geographic position, deep-water harbour facilities and its direct connection to the inland waterway, rail and road network makes the port equally important for both handling freigh and passengers.

Port of Kiel Services

The port of Kiel is positioned just south of the border with Denmark about 60 miles north of Hamburg. It is a busy port from which 50 ferry services a week to destinations in Denmark, Sweden and Lithuania are available.

The port itself is modern and spacious, with a wide range of facilities and three passenger terminals. Facilities feature restaurants and several shops. Car parks can be found near each terminal and there are dedicated parking spaces available for physically disabled drivers. Additionally, Kiel city centre is only a short walking distance or train ride away and is a vibrant port town with a number of interesting attractions.

Crossings to the Norwegian capital of Oslo sail five times a day with ferry operator Colorline. The duration of the voyage between Germany and Norway is approximately 19 hours.

Stena Line operates services to Gothenburg in Sweden. The trip aboard their large passenger, car and freight vessels take about 13 hours, 30 minutes. There is one daily crossing available.

Ferries also navigate to the Danish port of Bagenkop, with voyages just taking 2 hours 50 minutes. It is the shortest ferry service operated from the Port of Kiel. There are two daily services which are run by Langeland. On Sundays there is only one journey to Bagenkop available.

There are daily passenger services from Kiel to the Lithuanian Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania. It takes the ferry about 24 hours to reach the Port of Klaipeda from Kiel. These crossings are operated by Lisco Baltic Service GmbH and carry both freight and passengers.
