Poland is a country of geographical contrasts. It has one of only five natural deserts in Europe, the Bledow Desert in Southern Poland. It is made up of almost 30 per cent forest, has 23 National Parks and over 21 mountains, it has one of the highest numbers of lakes in the world, over 10,000. So there is plenty for tourists to see by way of beautiful countryside and with such diverse terrain there is also plenty to do by way of out outdoor activities with mountain hiking high on the list.
The wildlife in Poland is very diverse; many animals that have died out in other parts of the world are still thriving in Poland especially in eastern Poland where humans have never cleared the land. It is also acts as a very important breeding ground for European migratory birds.
Its architecture mirrors a fascinating history and has buildings from almost every era of European importance including Romanesque, Baroque, Rococo and Gothic. Poland's successful emergence from Communism and as full members of the European Union has meant that its tourism industry has flourished and currently more than 15.5 million tourists have visited some of Poland's most popular locations including Krakow, Warsaw and Poznan as well as the resorts along the coast of the Baltic.
