Copenhagen tourist guide - hotels and services

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and its port provides a pivotal gateway to the Baltic Sea. The city attracts travellers who can appreciate its laid-back charm and unique cultural identity as well as its fascinating historical legacy. Even though it is the largest city in Scandinavia, Copenhagen has the reputation as being incredibly visitor-friendly.

In the heart of the city, you can find the Tivoli Gardens, boasting the globe's oldest amusement park; this is also a great spot for relaxation. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, one of the most pivotal art museums in Scandinavia, is situated directly behind the Tivoli Gardens. Strolling around Nyhavn (New Harbour) can be interesting and will take you past numerous bars and restaurants. During the evening, Christianshavn is an idyllic place, with its cobbled streets and buildings dating from the 18th century. Here you also can find many restaurants, bars and cafés, which line the harbour.

If you have spare time, the areas around Copenhagen offer plenty of things to do and see including beaches, historical castles. If you are a swimming enthusiast, you have the option to drive to the beaches at North Zealand. The most popular beaches include Hornbæk, Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje and Liseleje. Alternatively, if you would like to see one of the country's finest castles, you could drive approximately 25 miles (40kms) northwest to Frederiksborg Slot, at Hillerød. If you drive past Christania's old harbour, you can see the 'Little Mermaid' statue positioned on the waterfront.

An ideal spot to commence your city tour is to start at the spacious Rådhuspladsen (main square), which links the newer part of Copenhagen to the older part, which is pleasantly pedestrianised. A stroll along Strøget will lead you to the popular tourist attraction, the Round Tower. Located on the tiny island of Slotsholmen, you can find Christiansborg Palace. For the last eight centuries, the palace has been Denmark's centre of political power. Situated under the palace, you can visit the remains of Bishop Absalon's castle. The Bishop founded Copenhagen, and the ruins of the castle date back to 1167.

Hotels in Copenhagen

There is a wide range of lodging options on offer in Copenhagen. Downtown Copenhagen is only a short drive from the port.

Some hotel establishments that are in convenient reach of the ferry port include the two-star rated Saga Hotel, a family-run facility that is positioned adjacent to the Central Railway Station and the renowned Tivoli Gardens. The hotel is housed in an apartment-style building dating from the late 19th century. The Selandia Hotel is also rated as a two-star venue, which has been recently refurbished and is also positioned close to the Planetarium and the Tivoli Gardens.

The Absalon ranks as a three-star rated hotel. It is a superior tourist-class establishment and features an ultra-modern interior and is centrally situated. The Maritime Hotel enjoys a similar rating and can be found on a quiet street, close to the majority of the most popular tourist sites.
