Transport to and from Heysham

Travellers seeking land links between the ferry port and localities in Lancashire and beyond have a variety of convenient transport options to choose from. Those travelling from afar can reach Lancaster by rail and change trains for direct service to Heysham. Alternatively, there are coaches following routes from a number of British cities to Lancaster and Morecambe. A limited bus service to the ferry port is available, or you can hire a taxi from one of the local companies.

Bus and shuttles from Heysham

Stagecoach Lancaster provides buses (numbers 3 and 4) following routes from Lancaster University to Heysham's Combermere road. From here, the ferry port can be reached with a 15-minute walk or a 2-minute drive. In addition, National Express, which is Britain's largest scheduled coach company, provides bus services to both Lancaster and Morecambe. Travelling by bus is the cheapest way of transport in the United Kingdom, but is also less convenient compared to travelling by train.

Car hire and road travel from Heysham

To reach the port by car, you should follow the M6 as far as Junction 34, at which point you can exit onto the A589. Drive along the A589 in the Morecambe direction for about 3.5 miles before following signs for the ferry port, which is positioned at Heysham's western end.

Heysham is a small town, which means there aren't many options for hiring a car. Travellers are advised to go to nearby Morecambe where more comprehensive car rental services are available. However, the best way to secure car hire is to book online in advance. One service provides the most attractive hire rates from various reputed car hire companies, including Budget, Hertz, Alamo and Europcar. The road network in Britain is of excellent quality and well maintained. The best way to explore Heysham and the surrounding area is by car.

Rail from Heysham port

Northern Rail operates Heysham Port railway station and services routes along the Morecambe Branch line. Beginning at Lancaster, there are stops at significant localities along the way including Bare Lane and Morecambe, before the train reaches its final destination at Heysham port. Since 2004, Northern Rail operates local services in the north of England.

Parking at Heysham port

Adjacent to the ferry port terminal, you will find a car parking facility. The car park can be used for short-term and long-term parking. Physically handicapped drivers will find a designated car parking area which is conveniently positioned within a short walk from the ferry terminal building.

Taxis from Heysham port

To avoid disappointment of not finding available taxis, it is best to secure a taxi by calling one of the following reputed local taxi services: Lancaster Radio Taxis (+44 1524 844 844); Go Cabs (+44 800 731 7109); or Morecambe & Heysham Taxis (+44 1524 832 111). Taxis offer the most convenient and fastest way of travelling to local destinations. For farther away destinations, it might be a better option to use the public transport system as it is less expensive.
