Ferry routes from Lerwick

There are currently a number of ferry services operating out of Lerwick, the majority of the services are cargo-only routes. Passenger ferries are operated by Smyril Line and Northlink, with indirect and direct crossings to several destinations in Scandinavia and Aberdeen.

Lerwick to Scandinavia ferries

Symril Line Ferry Company operates occasional sea voyages to Torshavn port on the Faroe Islands and to northern Denmark's Port of Hanstholm, with a weekly service on each of the routes. The service to Torshavn is only available during the summer months. It takes the ferry approximately 12 hours, 30 minutes to reach Torshavn from Lerwick. The service to Hanstholm is also only available during the summer. The duration of the voyage is about 19 hours, 30 minutes.

Torshavn is a vital port with fine passenger amenities and nearby restaurants and shops. The town enjoys an advantageous situation in the North Atlantic, midway between Norway, UK and Iceland which makes the port a great spot for stopovers between Norway, the Shetland Islands and Iceland. The Port of Hanstholm is the most recent Danish port. It is a modern fishing and trade harbour. Amenities at the port feature comfortable passenger waiting lounges, a café and several vending machines. The town is located near the port and boasts numerous shops and a currency exchange service. Lerwick to Aberdeen (via Kirkwall) ferries

The Lerwick to Aberdeen sailing occasionally makes an en-route stop at Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands. Services are available on run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the duration of the journey is approximately 5 hours, 30 minutes on the Port of Lerwick to the Port of Kirkwall leg and 7 hours, 15 minutes on the Port of Kirwall to the Port of Aberdeen leg.

The Port of Kirkwall is situated next to the town in the heart of the main island of the Outer Orkneys. Amenities at the port aren't extensive but the facility does have a shop, café and access for physically handicapped travellers. Lerwick to Aberdeen ferries

The Lerwick-Aberdeen route is the most popular and operated by NorthLink, with up to two daily services in the summer season on day and night vessels. Sailing times are approximately 14 hours.
