Ferry companies from Lerwick
Two ferry operators run regular ferry services from Lerwick. Northlink is the chief provider, with daily navigations to Aberdeen and three times weekly stop-offs at Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands. Smyril Line provides weekly sailings to Scandinavian destinations.
NorthLink Ferry Company
Since 2002 NorthLink runs the crossings between Lerwick and Aberdeen. Available are two direct crossings to Aberdeen port. Three weekly sailings make a en-route stop at the Port of Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands. Crossing times are approximately 14 hours.
Northlink operates two similar types of vessels, the Hrossey and the Hjaltland. Both crafts are conventional yet the maximum cruising speed they can reach is relatively fast. Onboard there are 100 cabins and a spacious vehicle deck. There are bars, restaurants and shops onboard and live entertainment on the night ferries. Smyril Line Ferry Company
Smyril Line operates freight and passenger ferries from the Port of Lerwick. There is one weekly ferry service between Lerwick and the Port of Hanstholm, Denmark, and another weekly crossing to the Port of Torshavn on the Faroe Islands. The same vessel operates a continuous loop and is only available during the summer months.
The Norröna is Smyril Line's cruise-class ferry. The craft boasts outstanding facilities and is capable of accommodating 1,500 passengers and carrying around 100 vehicles.
