Situated on Kefalonia's east coast, Sami is the second most active port on the island and a popular holiday destination for numerous visitors. The town's ideal situation makes it a great base from where to begin exploring some of Kefalonia's star attractions, while the plenty of tavernas and restaurants positioned around the town's picturesque harbour are a fabulous venue to absorb some traditional Greek ambience.

Passenger amenities at the port aren't extensive; the only services available are several vending machines. However, the town is situated just a stone's throw from the terminal and here you will find a wide range of facilities including restaurants, traditional Greek pubs, banks and shops.

Parking spaces at the ferry port are limited, particularly during the high season (summer months); tourists should find ample short and long-duration car parking spaces in the town itself without any difficulties. Travellers arriving on foot can make use of taxi services, which wait outside the terminal to meet arriving passengers. Alternatively, a lot of people walk the short distance from the ferry port to their lodging facility in the town.

Three principal ferry operators run frequent services from Sami including regular sea voyages to mainland Greece, mainland Italy and other nearby popular islands. Strintzis Ferries provides a busy year-round service between Sami and Patras, on Greece's mainland, with a brief en-route stop at Ithaca. The duration of the sailing from Sami to Ithaca is approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes, while the sea voyage from Sami to Patras lasts about 2 hours, 30 minutes.

There are two frequent ferry crossings between Sami and mainland Italy, with a busy sailing schedule during the high season and reduced available services during the low season. Maritime Way navigates a route from Sami to the Port of Brindisi in Italy on most days in the high season, with a sailing time of approximately 12 hours onboard an overnight passenger and car vessel. Another busy Italian route is provided by Agoudimos Lines, with their ferry service from Sami to the Port of Bari lasting approximately 15 hours onboard an overnight ferry.
