From Scotland's mainland, Northlink Ferries offers passenger and freight transport to both the Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. Schedules change according to the seasons. For both routes, final check-in time is half an hour prior to departure.

Ferry sea crossings include three voyages per week from Aberdeen to Kirkwall with a sailing time of six hours, and one crossing every day between Aberdeen and Lerwick with a crossing time of 12 hours.

Northlink also operates a route from Scrabster in Scotland to Stromness. The journey, which takes place three times daily, lasts 1 hour, 30 minutes. Scrabster's ferry port is the major gateway to the Orkney Islands. The port of Stromness is located about 16 miles from the capital town of Kirkwall.

Northlink ferries offer high standard amenities including quality dining, en-suite cabins, cafés and a play area for kids. On the long distance routes, there is a movie theatre showing current releases. The ships are designed according to the latest safety requirements.

Three of Northlink's vessels operate the routes between Aberdeen and the Shetland and Orkney Islands. Each of the vessels can accommodate 600 passengers, plus cargo and passenger cars. The majority of the cabins have twin beds but there are a number of cabins with extra drop-down beds as well, which are ideal for families.

The three ships are comfortably fitted for passenger transport, including spacious lounges and convenient cabins. Each ship has a pub providing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, shops and a self-service restaurant. The latest movies can be seen in a modern cinema on board vessels sailing a longer route.
