Survey shows how much Brits love reading on holidays.

The results of a recent study show that Brits are devoted to reading on holidays, with a huge percentage of us packing at least one book when we go abroad. The survey, conducted by travel operator Thomson Holiday, shows an astounding 86 per cent of British tourists pack at least one book when they head away on holiday.

Despite the huge surge in portable gadgets used for everything from music and movies to internet and business, UK travellers spend large portions of their holidays catching up on their reading. More than half of British holidaymakers (56 per cent) read a minimum of three books in just one week on holiday. Seven per cent of us get through five or six novels in just seven days.

The survey reveals that reading beat out all other holiday activities, with 27 per cent of men even admitting to having read their partner’s chick-lit novel while on vacation. Crime novels were by far the most popular, with 42 per cent saying detective dramas were their favorite genre. At 23 per cent each, Romance novels and biographies were also very popular genres.

Thomson Holidays produced the research to support its season of appearances by major authors. The travel firm is partnering with Headline Publishers. Fiction authors including Sheila O’Flanagan, Victoria Hislop, Lyn Andrews and Penny Vincenzi have already appeared at ‘An Audience…’ events held at Thomson Gold hotels across Europe. Author Simon Scarrow will appear at the 5T Grand Hotel President in Sorrento to meet fans on 4 September. The following day, he delivers a talk about Pompeii, Herculaneum and Roman life.
