A scientist says holidays can prolong life and keep us happier.

If you’re looking for an excuse to take a break, you can stop your search. What better reason do you need than a scientist telling you that you’ll live longer and be happier? A new study links travel to improved health and increased happiness. In the future, doctors might even prescribe vacations as treatment for depression.

A researcher in Australia studied the effects travel has on three different components of happiness. Dr Sebastian Filep, of Victoria University, found that the happiness of a holiday lasts for quite some time after the actual trip. He concludes that the effect could even help us live longer. Positive emotion, a sense of purpose and the feeling of being involved are all key parts of being happy. Dr Filep found that vacation trips can boost all three of these happiness aspects.

The study examined the experiences of 60 travellers, plus 200 more backpackers. Dr Filep discovered that the full travel experience, from planning and booking the trip, through the holiday and on to memories of the trip, including reviewing travel mementos like holiday photographs strengthens people’s positive feelings for their lives. Scientists elsewhere have already established the positive effects on health, well-being and longevity of being positive and happy. Dr Filep concludes that the extended happiness from taking a holiday could, therefore, lead to longer life.
