New Zealand is stil world's favourite long-haul destination

Edinburgh was named the top British city at this year’s Guardian Observer Travel Awards, followed by York, Bath, Belfast and Glasgow.

The awards were held in Thailand, early last week, and were inaugurated by Thailand’s Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejajiva.

The awards received a good response from readers, with over 2,000 more readers participating this year, taking the total number to 19,248 from last year’s 17,000.

This could be the sign of a recovering economy, as well as a renewed interest in travel and destinations. While many factions of the travel industry have been hit hard by the global recession, most have weathered the storm by introducing various cost-cutting methods, and by offering discounts to lure travellers out of their homes and on to flights, trains, cruises and other means of getting to their destinations.

The travel industry will now be hoping that his encouraging response from readers is a sign of better times to come.

Among the global cities, Sydney retained its top spot, while Cape Town edged into number two position.

New Zealand retained its Favourite Long-Haul Country crown, with an enviable satisfaction rate of 98.1%. Cambodia came in second in this category, followed by Chile, Vietnam and Japan.

Switzerland, Norway and Austria were named the favourite European countries.
