Bilbao in Spain is being promoted as the ideal green holiday destination
City dwellers who want to escape the smell of exhaust fumes this summer and explore somewhere beautiful should head over to the Spanish destination of Bilbao. Situated on the Spanish coast, this region is a great place for adventure sports such as rock climbing, quad-biking, trekking through the countryside and horse riding.
Luckily, getting to Bilbao is easy as P&O Ferries offer a service straight from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Passengers can drive to Portsmouth and leave their car in the long stay car park or catch the bus there and simply sail away to the Spanish shores.
"If heading in this direction, consider P&O's Bilbao-Portsmouth ferry. At more than 33 hours, it's slow, but you won't have to retrace your steps," travel writer Chris Moss wrote recently in the Observer. He added that Bilbao was was full of; "golden beaches, ancient towns and soaring peaks".
This is an ideal trip for those who enjoy sailing as the journey allows passengers to watch the scenery slowly slip past and make use of all the services on board.
One of the best things about visiting Bilbao is that it is still largely unexplored by foreign tourists. Although Spain receives more than 50 million foreigners each year, few seem to be aware of Bilbao’s abundant natural beauty.
