The recession is forcing many families to take their holidays in Britain instead of abroad
Many British people combat the cold winter weather by dreaming of a tropical summer holiday. Popular destinations are Spain, France and Portugal, while many daydream about exotic locations such as the Caribbean and Asia.
However, it would seem that the recession is forcing most people to pinch pennies and swap their sombrero for a knotted handkerchief and deckchair on one of Britain’s beaches this year.
The British tourist board is expecting more than a 20% rise in tourism this year, with popular destinations including coastal towns and the Lake District.
But it would seem that holidays will have to be cheap, even in Britain. David Thornton, head of marketing at Visit Peak District said during a BBC interview: “Holidaymakers will all be stepping down a notch this year. People who booked four-star hotels last year are booking three-star hotels this year. People who travelled to continental Europe and \ abroad last year are now booking five-star hotels in the UK.”
The only downside is that Britain’s roads are expected to become conjected, so leave early if heading for tourist destinations.
