The budget carrier is cutting three city routes in favour of popular resort destinations.

Birmingham to Cork flights are being discontinued as well as services from Cardiff to Amsterdam and Glasgow.

These services are being replaced with a route from South Wales to Almeria, Spain operating from 22 May through 22 October and a Birmingham to Newquay route that will run from 22 May until 20 September.

The Almeria service will operate twice weekly from Cardiff, and the link between Birmingham and Cornwall will be offer four times each week.

Any passenger already booked on a Cardiff to Amsterdam, Cardiff to Glasgow or Birmingham to Cork flight after March 29 will be contacted by bmibaby and offered either an alternative flight or a full refund of their ticket price.

One-way fares to Almeria from Cardiff will start from £41.99 one way and to Newquay from Birmingham to Newquay at £13.99, including all taxes and charges.

Bmibaby anticipates at least 13,500 passengers on its Almeria service and 20,000 on the Newquay route this year.

Crawford Rix, the airline’s managing director, said: “The airline industry is currently seeing a weakening in demand from consumers for impulsive city breaks and an increase for typical sun destinations; this is a direct result of the current economic climate.”
