New terminal in Scotland considered by Stena Line

Stena Line is expected to confirm it will build a massive ferry terminal on the west coast of Scotland.

The decision could come by the end of next week when the Swedish ferry line’s executive board meets.

Industry observers are speculating that the operator will move from Stranraer to a site that will be purpose-built, capable of handling the projected increase in passenger and freight traffic over coming 15-20 years, and larger vessels.

In May of this year, Stena opened its new Belfast terminal that had cost an estimated £37 million, and is preparing to make an even greater investment in Scotland, where they handle approximately 1.2 million passengers each year on ferry services.

Although passenger traffic number on Irish Sea crossings for the eight month period ending 31 August show a six per cent decline over the same period in 2007, and also a drop of three per cent in coach customers, Stena still transported approximately 1.8 million passengers and around 500,000 cars and 11,000 coaches through August of this year.

Stena officials have indicated that the passenger experience at airports is getting worse and the negative reaction of the travelling public toward the extra costs added to airfares will continue to encourage travellers to switch to ferry services, when possible, in the months and years to come.
