River Wear ferry service may return
Ferry Online Travel News 04/09/2008
Centuries of years of history may come back to life with ferry service returning to the River Wear.
For many years in the past, ferries were the main means of getting across the Wear to Sutherland, but all service was discontinued a half century ago, in 1958.
Over the past few months, a new interest has arisen in reinstating ferry service on the Wear, to help promote area tourism and to “breathe new life into the Wear.”
It has been reported that Nexus, the Tyne and Wear passenger authority, has offered to look into the prospects of bringing the boats back to Wearside.
A Nexus spokesperson commented: "It's very early days, but we have agreed to work with the Sunderland Partnership and the city council to look at the feasibility of operating a ferry service on the River Wear."
The "heritage champion" of Sunderland, City Councillor Denny Wilson, said that this was encouraging news and that it was a signal that the concept was being considered seriously.
Wilson has suggested that ferry boats could also be used to provide links to the historic parts of Sunderland, such as Hendon and St Peter's, and also to increase river traffic.
