UK ferry travel offers alternative to airline hassles
Ferry Online Travel News 01/09/2008
Port of Dover authorities attributed growth in passenger numbers to the ease and convenience of ferry travel.
More than 15 million UK travellers passed through the Port of Dover in 2007. January of this year showed an increase in traffic of 1.1 per cent over January of last year, and gave an indication of the growth that was to continue through the year to this point.
A public relations manager for the Port, Mike Southey, attributes the increase in passenger traffic partially to a reaction against “cheap flights” that have actually cost travellers a great deal of time and inconvenience.
”We think [ferry travel] is regaining popularity after a period of a few years when there seemed to be a small shift towards airline journeys. It's very much a smoother and easier passage through a seaport than an airport,” he added.
Southey noted some passengers have commented that lengthy airport security queues also were leading them to choose the ferry whenever possible.
UK travellers who take their cars on the ferry so they can drive to their holiday destinations on the continent are reminded to check their insurance policies to ensure they provide adequate cover abroad.
The AA issued a warning last week that holidaymakers heading abroad with their cars make incorrect assumptions at times about what their insurance actually covers.
