Gordon Brown visited rescue crews from the Riverdance
According to a report by 10 Downing Street, Gordon Brown recently made a visit to those workers involved in the rescue of passengers from the Riverdance ferry earlier this month.
Bad weather conditions and a large freak wave caused the ferry to run aground, just off the coast of Blackpool on January 31st. Air crews assisted sea crews to evacuate 14 passengers from the ship after the accident. The passengers were taken to Blackpool Airport where two required treatment for mild hypothermia.
The Prime Minister was welcomed to the RAF Valley in Holyhead, North Wales, by Albert Owen MP. Gordon Brown met with sea and air rescue crew and toured the passenger terminal.
Since 2004, the site has been approved for passengers flights on an intra-Wales air service between Cardiff and the RAF Valley. Highland Airways operates the flights which first took off on May 8th, 2007 and proved to be immediately popular.
The Riverdance is a RORO Ferry which operates on the Irish Sea, generally between Heysham and Warrenport. Salvage of the ship has already began and crews are expecting to float the ship later this week. Crowds of people have come to see the boat, treating it as something of an attraction. Local traders have seen a resulting increase in their sales as people come to the area to view the wreck.
