Salvage of Riverdance begun
Ferry Online Travel News 11/02/2008
Salvage of a wrecked ferry has started
During the last days of January and the first week of February, two ships ran into bad weather and had to be evacuated. The fishing vessel the Spinningdale grounded on St. Kilda on February 1st and the Ro-Ro Ferry Riverdance ran aground on Blackpool beach the day before.
There were only four passengers on board the ferry which was bound for Heysham, Lancashire when it got into trouble. All four were safely evacuated. When the ship continued to list, 10 non-essential crew were evacuated by helicopter.
This week the salvage of the Riverdance began with plans for the Spinningdale still being made. A crane has been deployed to the beach at Cleveleys to lift equipment on board the ferry.
Contractors have been hired to help collect wood, scrap metal and cargo which fell from the ferry, as it washes up upon the shore. Meanwhile, warnings have been issued to the general public in the area, to use caution while on the beach, as sharp metal may be washing up in the area. The public is advised to notify the police of any metal on the beach.
Local officials have set up a security zone around the beached vessel. The area has been restricted for safety reasons and anyone entering the area without authorization could be liable to prosecution and a fine of up to £50,000.
