Irish Sea link reforged?

Locals are working hard to restore the ferry link between Cork and Swansea

The ferry link between Swansea and Ireland could be back in business as early as April according to the Irish consortium working to reestablish the connection. The consortium is led by James Campbell, who recently announced that a ship had been found in Scandinavia which could be used on the route in the spring.

The tourist industry in Swansea was happy to hear of the developments. Geoff Haden, the vice chairman of Tourism Swansea Bay, said: "It is very good news that positive moves are being made to re-establish the route."

The route was canceled last January because the company responsible for the link said their vessel was no longer suitable. The ship making the daily crossing was aging. Although the company attempted to find a new ship when they were ultimately unable to do so, the service was canceled. As a result, 30 people lost their jobs.

The ferry service between Swansea and Cork had been in operation since 1987 and carried over three million passengers, and their tourist dollars into Swansea as a result.

Michael Courtney, a councilor in Cork, is optimistic that the ferry service will resume in time to catch the summer tourist season and many speculate that the Port of Cork will offer monetary incentives to whoever takes over the new route.
