Hopes for a new pier in New Brighton

Plans to outline possible construction of a new pier.

New Brighton may become the site of the UK's first new pier in 50 years once the Wirral Council assesses the feasibility of the project.

The £210,000 feasibility study needs to analyze several aspects of the project, including ecological factors and flood risk. If approved, the North West Development Agency (NWKA) will fund the construction.

An analysis by Bullen and Partners in 1991 outlined the possibility of constructing on the original site, but it is necessary to conduct an updated, in-depth analysis at this point.

The old pier was taken down in 1973 and had been owned by Lyons Tea Rooms. The area of inspection for the new pier is focused on the Victoria Road waterfront, near the site of the old pier.

Cllr Pat Hackett said this could bring back one of New Brighton's classic icons.

"This is great news for New Brighton and fully vindicates our approach to revitalising the resort after so many years in the doldrums," Hackett said. "The NWDA indicating it would be prepared to fund the feasibility study is absolutely phenomenal news."
