Hoverspeed was established in 1981 when it merged two Cross-Channel operators - Seaspeed and Hoverlloyd. It initialy operated hovercrafts from Dover to Calais.
It was then bought by Sea Containers Ltd who pioneered the vehicle carrying catamaran The Seacat. In its heyday it operated a fast sea crossing so you could Hoverspeed to France in under 1 hour from Dover to Calais transporting over 360.000 vehicles with 1.2 million passengers every year.
