Swansea Port provides outstanding communication links with easy access to the M4 motorway and direct access to Great Britain's railway network. Swansea is less than three miles (five kilometres) by dual carriageway from junction 42 of the M4 motorway. Swansea has developed a significant trade base in the Mediterranean as well as with Western and North Europe and the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.

The port's main freight-handling trade is shipping and receiving steel cargoes for Corus. The facility is well-equipped with a wide array of heavy-duty handling equipment, providing a range of fork-lift trucks and quayside cranes with lifting capacities of up to 40 tonnes. Swansea Cork Ferries operates a passenger ferry service to Cork, Republic of Ireland from the Swansea ferry port terminal, which is located on the east bank of the River Tawe. The ferry service between Swansea and Cork operates once daily. Duration of the sea voyage is approximately 10 hours.
