The Port Of Dieppe
The ferry port of Dieppe is a popular seaside resort on the north coast of France at the mouth of the River Arques in Seine-Maritime. It has a large number of ex pat Brits in it's population.
It is an important trading centre for fish and fruit. It local industries include fishing, shipbuilding and light manufacturing. As an important cross-channel ferry port it links up with Newhaven on the south coast of England.
Like all coatal towns is has a long history of operating ferry services with vessels ranging from sailing ships, to paddle steamers in the 1840s.
The Port of Dieppe was expanded east into the area now known as the Bout du Quai in the sixteenth century when Dieppe became one of the main French ports. Today it is one of the most visited ports with over 200.000 tourist passengers each year.
Port of Dieppe services
Dieppe is situated 165kms/102miles northwest of Paris (via Pontoise) and 55kms/34miles northwest of Rouen. Tourists visit this port town for an eclectic overload of history, art, family fun and nightlife. Dieppe also provides an outstanding gateway to Brittany, Normandy and other beautiful regions parts of France, with daily ferry services to southeast England's Port of Newhaven.
The English speaking tourist office can be found on the Pont Ango, which separates the leisure port from the ferry harbour. Banks are in service from 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, while further amenities feature a newsagent and a cafe in the terminal building.
A sole ferry service operates from the Port of Dieppe. Transmanche Ferries operates the crossing between Dieppe and Newhaven. This route was previously run by Hooverspeed but the company recently cancelled their services.
