Locals urge restoration of Shetland-Norway ferry service
Ferry Online Travel News 02/08/2010
Shetlanders are pushing for a ferry link to Norway to be reinstated.
Local people are urging the government to restore ferry services between the island and Norway. Many see Shetland as economically, historically and culturally closer to Norway than to Scotland, which currently enjoys links to the island. A local petition asks the government to let NorthLink provide a ferry service between Shetland and Norway. A previous such service was operated by P&O.
The petition was launched by Graham Irvine, a resident of Whiteness, on Shetland. He thinks the lack of a ferry service is harming both the economy and culture of the Shetland Islands. He complains about the lack of a ferry service between Shetland and Norway, which he sees as being much closer economically and culturally to Shetland than is Scotland.
He is calling for a stable ferry link between Shetland and Scandinavia and says NorthLink could retain any profits from the sailings to help fund the service Mr Irvine sees as a lifeline. In the past, other operators, including P&O Ferries, offered a service to Norway from Shetland. NorthLink currently provides service between Shetland and Aberdeen out of the port at Lerwick.
