The two communities are overjoyed at news of the extended service.

Representatives from Poole were ecstatic at news that ferry operator Brittany is extending its fast-ferry service between Poole and Cherbourg, giving passengers another two-and-a-half months of service. A delegation representing Poole and Cherbourg had earlier lobbied management at Brittany Ferries after the company announced it was ending the year-round service provided by the Barfleur.

In December of last year, Brittany said it would stop providing the service. Cllr Charles Meachin, who was then mayor of Poole, Cllr Ron Parker, cabinet portfolio holder for the local economy, joined their counterparts from Cherbourg to meet with the chairman of the board at Brittany Ferries in April. Their lobbying appears to have borne fruit, after the company announced that services provided by the Vitesse, which operates the fast-ferry service between the British and French ports, will be extended from September to 31 October, and will start six weeks earlier than previously scheduled, at the beginning of April.

The Poole representatives were delighted at the news and said this highlighted the power of their co-operation with Cherbourg and underscored the value of the port of Poole. Their next mission involves getting Brittany to provide a conventional ferry service from November through to March.
