Flights across the UK remain grounded and flights in Europe are severely curtailed.

The suspension of UK air travel extended into a fifth day as the closure of UK controlled airspace is set to continue until at least 01:00 tomorrow.

Authorities say restrictions on Scottish airspace are expeted to be lifted at 7am tomorrow.

A BAA spokesman confirmed all flights in the UK remained suspended today and the decision to open airspace would be taken by authorities. He said that even after airports reopen, passengers need to confirm their flight’s status before they head to the airport.

BAA meanwhile reiterated that passengers should not travel to airports at the moment but should instead get updates from their carriers.

British Airways and Aer Lingus cancelled all flights. Ryanair has suspended flights to and from northern Europe.

Seven European countries have suspended air travel. They are Belgium, Estonia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Luxembourg,.

Thirteen other countries in Europe have partially closed their airspaces: Bulgaria, France, Italy, Latvia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden and Ukraine.

To assist travelers stranded in Europe, Eurostar has added more services. Ferry companies have added services to deal with the increased demand. National and European coach lines have also boosted services to help get stranded passengers home.
