Leaf hatchback to go on sale by end of the year

Hertz, the largest car rental agency on the planet, has submitted its approval to the concept of all-electric cars and announced that they would make Leaf models available at selected rental sites around U.S and Europe, beginning this year. With its 100-mile range, the five-seat Leaf would make a good rental for most urban trips and maybe short-term car-sharing programs.

Hertz has surplus data on the average mileage incurred by each type of vehicle in its fleet, enabling it to steer prospective hirers towards or away from the Leaf. Hertz will most likely install a high voltage (fast charge) equipment that allows a Leaf to recharge its battery to 80% of its capacity in just 30 minutes.

Nissan will commence selling the Leaf electric Hatchback by the end of this year in certain areas. They aim to have a nationwide roll out by 2012. The people who invest in the early Leaf models will be provided a mix of 220 volt and fast charge equipment and their usage will be tracked.

Nissan has set up a website for U.S. residents to edify potential buyers and renters on this model, which is currently completing a countrywide tour of potential early launch markets. They hope to acquire 20,000 advance orders on this model by the end of the year.

Hertz has an extensive history of renting unusual cars, like the special 2008 Chevrolet Corvette ZHZ models and a special rental version of the high performance of 2007 Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT-H.
