Ferry services disrupted

The winter weather has been as unpredictable as ever this year in the United Kingdom. Heavy snowfall and sub zero temperatures have hit most of the nation and disrupted a number of services in the process. Rail and bus service had to be shut down in some areas and school cancellations numbered in the hundreds due to roads that were deemed unsafe. A nationwide shortage of grit and salt did not help matters, as road clearing vehicles were left without the proper supplies to do the job. A record number of cold weather payments were made this year as poorer families and pensioners found it hard to pay the steep bill associated with heating a house in this weather. It has been a wild winter for weather and even though it is nearing mid-February, the strange incidents are still occurring.

Most recently fog was the cause of the problem as ferry service in some locations had to be shut down due to fog that made navigation impossible. The Heysham Port had to be shut down after heavy fog made it very difficult to see. Steam Packet Sailings were also cancelled after the port was closed. Both sailings to Heysham, including the morning, which was supposed to leave at eight AM, as well as the return sailing, which was to leave the following morning at two fifteen. Thus far, no further sailings had to be cancelled and all services were set to return to form.

The Met Office has predicted that strange and severe weather could continue all the way until the end of the month.
