Costa making huge savings through green initiatives

Things are going well for leading travel company Costa Cruises, despite the recession that has been having a strong impact on the travel industry at large over the last few years.

Italian owned Costa Cruises, which is the number one cruise line in Europe, recently released the results from the fourth edition of its Sustainability Report. The report was drafted following with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines and shows figures from December 2007 to November 2008.

It seems that the last year has been successful for Costa Cruises as not only are passenger numbers on the increase, the company also managed to achieve a number of goals in order to improve both their financial situation and overall image.

Some of the changes include a 5% reduction in fuel consumption for each mile traveled as well as a dramatic increase in the amount of waste that the company recycled. Costa Cruises has been focusing their attention on making the company more environmentally friendly, which has also helped them to save money. They discovered that simply by using desalinization plants they were able to cut down on the amount of drinking water they needed to carry onboard ships.

Pier Luigi Foschi is the Costa Crociere S.p.A. Group Chairman & CEO. In a recent interview he announced that: “In 2008, which marked Costa Cruises’ 60th anniversary, we recorded substantial growth accompanied by increased commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Despite the impact of rising oil prices, the onset of the financial crisis and the economic downturn, we have invested in resources and process optimisation in order to maintain the high level of sustainability of our business.”
