A woman who makes a daily ferry crossing to Shetland College was named student of the year.
Forty-three-year-old Angela Irvine, of Whalsay, is a student at Shetland College UHI in Lerwick, and makes the twice-daily 30-minute ferry crossing to study there.
She commented: “I have found the travelling exhausting, but I'm so glad that I have continued with full-time study.”
The contemporary textiles student and mother of two was praised by the prospective University of the Highlands and Islands. She was at the top of the list of UHI's 12 finalists, winning £300 in prize money - which she has indicated will help pay for her ferry travels.
She said: “I can't believe it. It was already a huge sense of achievement when the college named me as their candidate for the overall award, and this is even more thrilling for me and my family.”
Irvine dedicated her award to fisherman husband John Lowrie, and to her children, 12-year-olkd Rory and 10-year-old Chloe, for their support. He noted that he is considering starting her own business after completing her studies.
Prof Bob Cormack, of UHI, said: “We faced the usual hard choice in selecting a winner as we had so many outstanding candidates, but Angela deserves the title for her hard work and achievements.”
