UK travel companies expect a rise in last–minute bookings after a turnabout in the Met forecast.

Earlier this week, the Met Office revised its forecast, saying that more rain is expected for August. In April, the extended forecast for the summer months indicated that the weather would be sunny and hot and that Britain was “odds-on for a barbecue summer”.

With the pound weak against the euro and the prospect of pleasant weather at home, many Britons were expected to take their holidays in the UK. Recently, however, travel companies in the UK are reporting that bookings for foreign holidays in August are up, as the weather drives more holidaymakers to sunny climes.

The CEO of mainstream travel at Thomas Cook, Pete Constanti, noted that there are still deals to be had on last-minute packages to destinations having “guaranteed” sunshine.

He added: “The summer holidays have only just started and today’s weather update will send many parents into despair as there are still five long weeks before school starts again. Rather than worry about how to fill these long wet days in the UK, our advice is to book a holiday with guaranteed sunshine.”
