European hoteliers say UK holidaymakers are the worst-behaved tourists.

Not so, according to a world-wide survey conducted by Expedia.co.uk, which saw UK holidaymakers in a much more positive light.

Hotel operators on the continent also said that Britons were the messiest tourists, the ones who complained the most and the worst tippers of all.

World-wide, however, Britons was second only to the Japanese as being the best tourists overall.

In the best-dressed tourist category, Italians ranked first, followed Britons, with the French coming in third.

In Britain, hoteliers rated their own country’s tourists the second-worst tourists of all 0 coming in just behind Americans.

The world-wide poll surveyed 4,557 hoteliers, and the Japanese were clearly seen as the best tourists – the quietest, the most polite, the cleanest and the tourists least likely to complain.

In the survey, the French were ranked as the worst overall – the rudest and the worst tippers.

Americans were voted the loudest, followed by the Italians and Spanish, while the Canadians, Germans and Australians – along with the Japanese and British – were considered the most polite.

The head of product marketing for Expedia.co.uk, Jonathan Cudworth, said: “Being voted the worst tourists in the world by our closest neighbours highlights the fact that the 'Brits Abroad' moniker is a label we still haven't managed to shrug off.”
