ICG claim that the number of travellers choosing to go by ferry has dropped massively.

The global slump in the economy is hitting many companies around the world and with lots of holidaymakers cutting back on spending in 2009, Dublin based ferry company, Irish Continental Group, have reported the number of passengers travelling in the first six months of the year is down 9.7 per cent.

They blamed changing trends and they are ‘continuing to actively manage’ its costs and outgoings in a bid to withstand the financial pressure, they said after they met with shareholders at an annual general meeting. 571,000 travellers used the ferry service up until June 20th 2009 and 145,500 vehicles. These numbers have dropped from last year by 6.6 per cent.

Cut backs on spending are at the top of the list for many and holidays are one of the first things that people must forego in order to wait out the recession. Irish Continental’s freight services are also under pressure as reduced trade is hitting all aspects of the company’s offerings. Freight services were down a whopping 23 per cent from 12 months previous and the number of containers used has also fallen by even more with 29 per cent fewer orders.
