A ferry service linking Fife in Scotland to Zeebrugge in Belgium just completed its maiden voyage

Travelling between Scotland and the rest of Europe just got much easier, thanks to a new ferry service that connects Fife in Scotland to Zeebrugge in Belgium. Named the Scottish Viking, the ferry will cross the channel three times a week.

The new ferry service is due to revolutionize travel between the United Kingdom and Europe. Before this ferry link was introduced, people wishing to travel between Europe and Scotland would either have to contemplate the expense of flying or the time consuming journey of travelling through the Eurotunnel and then a very long bus journey from Dover in the Southeast of England all the way to Scotland.

Although a source of national pride for the Scottish, it should be noted that the Scottish Viking was actually built in an Italian shipyard and registered in Italy. This means that the ferry also has to have an Italian captain.

Still, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond seems unconcerned about this as he recently commented to the press; "I'm delighted to welcome the Scottish Viking … not only will the Scottish Viking allow access to important commercial contacts, it will be a boost for the local economy in Fife, and an environmentally friendly route home for Scotland's friends, family and visitors."
