Ferry Online Travel News 26/03/2009
New figures show that UK rail bookings for the Easter holiday this year are up by 40 per cent.
Thetrainline.com is reporting that nearly 45,000 customers have made advance ticket bookings for the Easter bank holiday, an increase over the 31,000 bookings by this time last year.
Routes that are seeing the greatest rise in popularity include Birmingham to London, which has experienced a 238 per cent rise in advance bookings as compared with 2008, Glasgow to London, which is up by 320 per cent and also Edinburgh to Manchester, up by 141 per cent.
On rail routes across the UK, advance ticket sales have increased by 43 per cent in the period from Maundy Thursday to Easter Saturday, as compared with last year, according to the online booking company’s data.
The company’s commercial director, Ben Pearson, commented: “Visiting friends and relatives in the UK appears to be a far more popular option this year than a city break on the continent as people continue to keep a tight leash on their wallets.”
Pearson added: “And while rail travel is up generally, advance bookings are particularly on the increase as travellers finally become wise to the savings that can be made by booking in advance rather than buying a ticket on the day of travel from the station.”
