On Monday, staff at train operator c2c will strike for 24 hours due to a dispute over holidays.

More than 130 ticket office and other retail staff working for the London-to-Essex rail operator will engage in a walkout, it was announced by union representatives.

The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) said that the action is being taken due to the failure of talks to resolve the dispute.

According to the unions, c2c, which is owned by National Express, has a holiday policy that only pays staff when they work on a bank holiday.

Bob Crow, the RMT general secretary, said: “We called off a strike two weeks ago to allow further talks, but despite hours of discussions there has been no satisfactory movement from the company and we have no alternative but to reinstate strike action.”

Crow added: “Our members are quite clear that they want an unequivocal commitment to 28 days' paid leave, and not ever more complex ways of avoiding it.”

The TSSA general secretary, Gerry Doherty, commented: “It beggars belief that National Express are refusing bank holiday pay to our members after announcing profits of £194 million for last year.”
