The travel firm has said that the cuts will be made throughout the company to help reduce operating costs.

The move, which the travel company has said is part of a three-year cost reduction programme, was made as it becomes likely that bookings for the year are likely to drop.

In a statement released by Kuoni, the company noted: “The cost savings targeted will mean a reduction in workforce numbers. As in the past, this should largely be achieved through natural attrition. For the few exceptions, Kuoni will be devising socially-acceptable solutions for the employees concerned.”

Switzerland-based Kuoni did not say how many job cuts would be made this year.

“By investing in specific measures to enhance employees' skills and in steadily improving efficiency, the Kuoni Group will both reduce its costs and prepare its employees for the growing challenges presented by the changing travel market,” the statement continued.

Kuoni’s board approved a CHF106 million plan last week that involved both investment and cost reduction efforts.

Key elements of the programme include a strengthening of the company by increased product differentiation, a broadening of product distribution and a reduction in operating costs.

The company plans to make booking and inventory systems across the firm compatible to optimize the management of inventory.
