The eco-friendly travel specialist says that the coming year will see an increase in holidays closer to home.

During 2008, Responsibletravel.com reports that England moved up from 11th place on the list of most popular destination to first place, and that the enquiries they’ve received on holidays in England are up by 97 per cent.

Justin Francis, the online company’s managing director, said: "2009 will be one of the toughest years that the travel industry has ever faced. It'll be tough for travellers too. Many won't take a holiday at all whilst others will cut out second and third holidays, choosing to stay at home - a 'staycation' - or with friends instead.”

Francis added: "Those that can afford additional breaks will explore much closer to home, particularly as the pound drops in value against the Euro - allowing them to save up the pennies and the annual leave for a longer annual holiday which will come in the form of classic, special travel experiences - those unforgettable once in a lifetime trips.”

The travel executive stressed that once travellers have made the choice to spend on a holiday there will want to ensure that their money buys the best possible experience, and that classic destinations will be at the top of their lists. Favourites such as the Masai Mara, Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat are expected to be top choices.

In addition, the travel company reported that classic destinations in the Middle East are rising in popularity, with Syria showing an increase of 94 per cent and Jordan a rise of 69 per cent.
