The new Baltic Queen was christened and launched last week at the STX shipyard in Rauma.

In April of 2007, Tallink signed a contract worth 180 million euros with STX shipyards for the construction of the massive ferry, which will begin its operations in the spring of 2009 on the Tallinn-Mariehamn-Stockholm route.

Mea Mehtonen, who is the four-year-old daughter of Tallink’s marketing manager, Henry Mehtonen, christened the "Baltic Queen."

According to the line’s plan, the new cruise ferry will begin sailing in the spring of 2009, from Tallinn in Estonia to Stockholm, Sweden, via Mariehamn.

This cruise ferry is the fifth in a series of sophisticated vessels for which Tallink has an agreement with STX Europe. From its Helsinki yard, STX also delivered a fast ferry last year, called “Star,” to Tallink.

"We are proud of Tallink's confidence in our building competence which has resulted in the long and strong relationship between our companies," said Martin Landtman, the president of STX Finland Cruise Oy.

"STX Europe is the leader in world ferry market. In our new vessels we have special focus on, in addition to reliable quality, ecological alternatives and energy economy," he added.
