Following a fire onboard one of its vessels, the Coastal Inspiration, passengers were allowed to reboard.

BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said that passengers had been given clearance to reboard after an inspection by Transport Canada, and that service to Duke Point recommenced at around 6:00 pm.

All 552 passengers of the ferry’s passengers, who were on board for the 12:45 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Duke Point were required to disembark when the vessel returned to port on Friday afternoon. There were no injuries reported.

One passenger indicated that around 20 minutes into the sailing from Tsawwassen to Duke Point, the crew told passengers that the ferry would have to return to its dock because of a vehicle fire. The passengers were asked to stay away from the vehicle area, and remain in the lounge and cafeteria areas.

"There was smoke on the main deck - quite a lot of smoke," the passenger reported. He added that as passengers were disembarked there were two fire engines and an ambulance waiting by the terminal.

Delta fire department’s deputy chief, Rick Lehbauer, stated that the fire was contained to the one vehicle and that no mishaps or injuries occurred during the incident.

"There was minimal damage, probably some maintenance issues to the ferry," he added.
