Government funding keeps ferry service afloat

Government funds commited to save ferry service.
The objective of the cash infusion is to give Bay Ferries additional time to find for a longer-term solution to their financial difficulties and to provide for transport services for all of the south-west of Nova Scotia.
"I think it’s critically important that we see continued service for our local businesses," said ACOA Minister Peter MacKay during a telephone interview after the announcement was made, emphasizing the importance of the ferry to fish exporters who rely on the service to move their product to the other provinces in Canada and to the eastern U.S.
He added that the service is critical in the import and export of goods throughout the Atlantic Gateway.
MacKay stressed that it is important for the entire business community of the region to be involved and support the ferry service. Independent truckers, forestry companies, and companies such as Michelin all depend on the service to support their efforts, he continued.
"Bay Ferries has worked very hard through the downturn in the tourism industry, (rising) fuel prices and the rising dollar."
