Ferry services to Madeira from Portugal
Ferry Online Travel News 04/07/2008
first sea service to the island in 30 years
Since June 15 this year ferry company Naviera Armas has been operating a sailing from Portimao on the Portuguese mainland to the island of Madeira’s ferry port of Funchal.
The crossing is operated by a new vessel - 'Volcano of Tijarafe' of the Naviera Armas fleet and the service between Portimao and Funchal is available once weekly..
The start of this service was a historical moment for the island of Madeira as it is the first time in more than 30 years that a ferry crossing from mainland Europe has been available again and so a new era of travelling to the Madeira Islands has started..
Typically visitors to Madeira have had to fly to this mid-Atlantic island which is more than 1000kms west of Portugal, and usually out of reach of a ferry service..
Naviera Armas has not said if the service is on a trial and will continue through the winter months..
