Summer fun on the Isle of Wight is a short ferry ride away from England’s south coast.

Three major sailing events are scheduled on the Isle of Wight this summer, meaning lots to both on and off the water this summer, and all just a short ferry ride away from the south coast of England. Most every British sailor got their start on the Solent, which separates England from the Isle of Wight.

There are learn-to-sail packages on offer, for those who are inspired to take to the pristine waters off the island. Sailing here is a year-round activity that’s enjoyed by many British families. Canoeing and sea kayaking are also popular boating options on offer here.

Beginner sailors can sign up for a programme on Cowes Parade called ‘Try Sailing.’ They’ll get to spend an hour on the water with a professional skipper. Teens can make waves at the White Air Extreme Sports Festival, where they’ll be able to ‘Have a Go’ at sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing – 18 sports in all.

JP Morgan’s Round the Island Yacht Race sees over 1600 boats competing in the 55-nautical mile course that circles the Isle of Wight. This race is the UK’s third largest participant event. The fleet starts out at Cowes, and then races to The Needles in the west, round St Catherine’s Point and then on past Bembridge, returning to the Solent.

From this point, the fleet heads round No Man’s Land Fort, across Osborne Bay and on to the finish line at Cowes. There are numerous vantage points where spectators can watch the race, such as The Parade at Cowes, the Needles Battery, the lighthouse at St Catherine’s and the Ryde Pier.
