Maiden Matlock Bath voyage delayed
Ferry Online Travel News 12/06/2008
The first trip of a new river ferry service has been postponed
The official maiden voyage of the long awaited Matlock Bath river ferry has been delayed three months. The £20,000 project was scheduled to open in time to accommodate travellers over the May Bank Holidays and Easter, but the official opening had to be postponed after the ferry developed problems with its operating mechanism.
A spokesperson for the district council said: "Obviously DDDC is disappointed that the ferry is not operable yet, but we are confident that it will be operating by the start of July, and be a key new visitor attraction within the Matlock Parks.
"The ferry will be one of only a few hand-operated chain ferries in this country: it is critical to make sure the boat operates correctly before the public can be taken on board," she added.
The spokesperson also confirmed that the ferry is not wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs will not be accommodated on the ferry.
The spokeswoman added: "The ramped access, with only two steps into the boat, will enable people with pushchairs to use the boat. However, the ferry is unable to accommodate wheelchair users."
The ferry marks the last stage of the Matlock Parks Project, which was funded by the Heritage Lottery and Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership and implemented by the Derbyshire Dales District Council.
