Superspeed ferry revolutionizes ferry service
Ferry Online Travel News 09/06/2008
A new breed of ferries is speeding through the waters
A new ferry will start plying the waters between Larvik in Norway and Hirtshals in Denmark. The new ferry is capable of completing the route in three hours and 45 minutes, a full two hours faster than older ships on the same route. The “SuperSpeed2” is capable of travelling 27 knots.
The Superspeed ferries are a new generation of ultramodern fast ships which are changing ferry service around the world from the UK to Denmark. “SuperSpeed 1” was delivered in February this year and has already been used to make the crossing from Kristiansand in Norway to Hirtshals in three hours and 15 minutes.
The two vessels were bought from Aker Yards in Rauma for a total of €250 million.
In addition to the fast travelling time, the Superspeed ferries are designed to make loading times more efficient than traditional ferries as well. Cars and trailers can be loaded at the same time on two different decks, which means loading and unloading can be finished within an hour.
Juha Heikinheimo, President of Aker Yards, Cruise & Ferries said: "As each of our new deliveries, also SuperSpeed2 brings with it a number of innovations.”
Heikinheimo pointed out the radio-controlled loading concept for containers as an example of the ferry’s innovative features.
"In addition to these fast ferries, Aker Yards has previously built two of the world's largest cruise vessels with car decks for Color Line. We highly appreciate the reliance they as ship owners have placed on Aker Yards and are confident that we have a strong foundation to continue the cooperation with further world class vessel projects in the future", Heikinheimo continued.
The Superspeed ferries are designed and are being used for day use only and do not offer passenger cabins like those used on the ferry crossings between the UK and Denmark and Norway.
