Cork requires government aid after ferry closure
Ferry Online Travel News 05/06/2008
Without its ferry, the economy in Cork is suffering
An Irish councillor says that the businesses which rely on tourism in Cork should be compensated by the government for the loss of the Swansea-Cork Ferry. Bantry-based Cork county councillor John O’Shea is suggesting an injection of £78 million to help stimulate the local economy.
West Cork is said to be the area more economically affected by the loss of the popular ferry route. Since the ferry ceased operations two years ago, numerous businesses have closed down including petrol stations, hotels, bed & breakfast establishments and post offices.
Geoff Haden of Tourism Swansea Bay said that those businesses who were less dependant on ferry tourism have been much less affected by the closure. In partuclar, the area on the Welsh side of the Irish Sea has not noticed a significant change.
O’Shea says that the Irish government and the EU need to help stimulate the local economy in order to stop more businesses from closing. He says an aid package of £78 million is what it would take to do so.
