Cattle crossings cost more
Ferry Online Travel News 29/05/2008
Fuel prices have forced ferries to increase prices
Celtic Link is the only ferry company licensed to transport cattle. The managing director of the ferry company said that Celtic Link’s ability to continue to link Ireland and Europe is being jeopardized by rising fuel prices.
Crossings between Rosslare and Cherbourg recently increased in price. The company was forced to raise prices by 18 per cent. Paul Tyrell said that three years ago, the cost of fuel for the company was just €1.4 million. Today, fuel costs €4.5 million, causing the company to increase charges in order to offset costs. The link between Rosslare and Cherbourg now costs €500.
According to Mr. Tyrell, each crossing of the Diplomat, the company’s ferry, consumes as much as 32 tonnes of fuel. Three years ago, a tonne of fuel cost €145 but today it goes for €435. As a result, most cattle exporters will have to pay up to €3,500 per crossing.
Cattle prices for exports are expected to be affected by the ferry price increases, but passengers taking ferries should expect to see similar fare increases in the future, particularly if fuel continues to rise in price.
