Ferry delay for Bank Holiday

Routine maitenance has reduced ferries across the River Tamar

Torpoint ferries could be delayed over the Bank Holiday as one of the vessels used on the rout had to be taken out of service for maintenance work.

One of the ferries usually used on the route between Devon and Cornwall across the River Tamar was taken out of the water for a routine maintenance inspection. It is expected that the work will take approximately four weeks. During this time, the ferry will be in the dry docks at A&P Falmouth.

With one ferry out of the water, only two ferries will remain to service the crossing until the end of the month.

The Devon to Cornwall crossing is one of the busiest estuary ferry routes for vehicles in the UK. Between the three ferries usually plying the waters, the service carries an estimated two million vehicles annually.

The Plym II, Tamar II and Lynher II are the three ferries usually seen crossing the Tamar, named for the three tributaries of Plymouth Sound. Each ferry is capable of carrying up to 73 cars and operates by using chains and slipways. Regular service is provided at 10 minute intervals, however with one of the ferries on the dry docks, the service will operate until the end of the month every 15 minutes.
