Many Brits are ferrying themselves abroad this summer for festivals

European festivals are drawing a crowd of British tourists this year as wet weather forces them abroad. A growing number of British travelers are finding it cheaper to rent a car and ferry across the channel and attend foreign festivals than take long distance trains around the UK.

Receptionist, Suzy Cook, is one of many people who have recently told Newsbeat, they would prefer to go abroad this summer than stay at home and deal with the rain and the prices at home.

Cook is paying £100 for a three day festival including camping and a performance by Rage Against the Machine and Groove Armada in the Netherlands in May. Ferry services to the festival start at just £30 making the adventure imminently economical.

Cook said: "I'm really, really excited. I've wanted to see Rage Against the Machine since I was very young. This will be my second European festival, I went to Bennicassim in Spain last time. They're just so cheap."

According to Cook, the cost of hiring a car with friends will cost about the same price as taking a long-distance train to attend a festival in Britain. She said: "The beer and food's a bargain too. I've paid £3.50 for a hot dog at some festivals in Britain. That's ridiculous."

The Spanish festival Bennicassim sold half of its ticket to British citizens last year. One of those who attended, Robert Biddis, from Kent, said: "It was amazing. I will never rush to go to a British festival again.

"I used to go to either Reading or the V Festival. They are great, but I'd much rather be partying on a beach in the sun."

Two festivals in Belgium are expected to draw Brits this year: Pukkelpop and Rockwerchter. The Exit festival in Serbia was one of the cheapest events available last year and promises the Sex Pistols this year.
